Vietnam records a case of rectal detachment unprecedented in world medical literature.

Hanoi – Doctors at Viet Duc Hospital have successfully saved a 42-year-old male patient whose rectum was severed, a case unprecedented in clinical practice in Vietnam and in world medical literature.

"This is an exceptionally rare case of injury, never before recorded in clinical practice in Vietnam, and there is no specific treatment protocol in the world's medical literature," a representative of the institute said on June 29.

Currently, the patient's health is stable, and they are eating and walking normally after the emergency surgery. To restore the natural anus, the patient will need to undergo approximately 3 to 4 more surgeries in the near future.

Previously, the man was hospitalized in critical condition due to diffuse inflammation of the perineum, with a risk of life-threatening sepsis. The patient was transferred to Viet Duc Hospital after undergoing two surgeries—hemorrhoid surgery and anal abscess surgery—at another medical facility approximately 7 to 10 days prior, causing his condition to progressively worsen.

Dr. Nguyen Dac Thao from the Center for Digestive Surgery and Pelvic Floor Pathology at Viet Duc Hospital said that the treatment team assessed this as an extremely complex case.

Since there are no precedents for treating this type of injury in world medical literature, doctors must rely entirely on experience and the results of actual injury assessment to determine the appropriate course of action.

After careful consultation, the doctors decided to perform emergency surgery to control the source of infection and create a temporary colostomy to preserve the patient's natural anus.

Based on this case, medical experts advise people to seek examination and treatment for anorectal diseases at reputable medical facilities with specialized departments. Patients should absolutely not self-treat with folk remedies or self-intervention at home, as this can easily lead to serious complications, even death, or the need for a colostomy for life.

If complications arise after the first surgery, the patient should be immediately transferred to a specialized hospital. At the same time, lower-level medical facilities should proactively consult with higher-level hospitals with appropriate specialties when dealing with complex cases.
