(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Mr. Gunner, an American living in Da Nang, shared his surprise at the reasonable cost, short waiting time, and good service quality when he took his wife for a check-up at Hospital 199 (Da Nang).
In recent days, a video titled "We Tried a Public Hospital in Vietnam - We Were Shocked!", sharing the experience of a medical examination at Hospital 199 (Da Nang) by Gunner (an American living in Da Nang), has attracted attention.
According to Gunner, it initially started as a routine health checkup for his wife. She needed a chest X-ray, and Gunner documented the entire process to share with viewers.
According to their account, after arriving at the hospital by taxi at a cost of approximately $1.50 (nearly 40,000 VND), the couple were directed to the international visitor support department. The registration process took 5 minutes. Afterwards, his wife was taken for an X-ray and received the results after about 15 minutes.
What surprised Gunner was that services that in the US could cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars, were being performed at very low prices. He recounted that the cost of a chest X-ray was only $4.18 (over 109,000 VND).
"My wife's chest X-ray cost $4.18. Unbelievably, that's only the price of a Starbucks coffee," Gunner said.
After reviewing the results, the doctor noticed a minor issue that needed further investigation. The couple decided to have a CT scan of the lungs and were surprised to be told it could be done immediately without an appointment or needing to return another day.
“I inquired about a CT scan of the lungs and was told it could be done immediately. The cost for one scan is approximately $31 (over 800,000 VND),” Gunner shared.
While waiting, he observed the hospital's operations. What impressed Gunner was that the majority of patients were locals, from the elderly to families bringing relatives for check-ups. "This wasn't built to impress foreign visitors. It's a public hospital serving the people every day," Gunner remarked.
Besides the praise, the American visitor also pointed out one imperfection regarding the cleanliness of the CT scan area. However, according to him, the staff quickly acknowledged the feedback and addressed it.
After his experience, Gunner shared that what surprised him most was not just the low cost or short waiting times, but also the convenient access to healthcare services for the people. “Our experience was truly amazing. Everything was quick, the cost was reasonable, and the staff were friendly. The fact that a public hospital in Vietnam can provide such convenient service is what impressed me,” Gunner said.
A representative from Hospital 199 stated that the fee mentioned by the tourist includes the cost of examination and technical services. For foreigners, the examination fee may be slightly higher due to the additional time needed for guidance, but it is still reasonable compared to many other countries.
Currently, the High-Quality Clinic of Hospital 199 receives an average of 50-60 foreign patients per day, and this number can exceed 100 during peak periods.
According to Lieutenant Colonel, Specialist Doctor II Tran Nam Chung, Deputy Director of Hospital 199, the hospital provides a full range of services from health screening, routine check-ups, internal medicine and surgery treatment to cosmetic care. The team of doctors and nurses have good English communication skills, meeting the needs of international patients.
In addition, the hospital focuses on creating a friendly and professional medical environment with a separate examination area for foreigners, making it easier and faster to access services.
